World Ayurveda Day was yesterday... did you know? Many of us have heard the term, Ayurveda, but have little knowledge (or interest) in what it is.
Ayurveda is typically thought of in terms of food - but actually Ayurveda is not just about medicines and herbs; it also teaches us how to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda teaches that there are three foundation pillars of a healthy body - Aahar (food), Vihar (lifestyle), and Nidra (sleep). So, let us talk about these 3 pillars
But that is for another post. This post actually IS about eating and digestion more importantly.
As the holiday season approaches, the indulgent meals and festive treats can often leave us feeling more weighed down than uplifted. As an ancient practice, ayurveda, blends body, mind, and spirit, offers timely wisdom for keeping our digestion and energy balanced through the season's celebrations. Good right?
The Background:
Historically, Ayurveda’s foundations were based on male bodies and lifestyles; traditional practices and diets were designed for warriors and sages of ancient India. Now days, Ayurveda has evolved beautifully to meet the modern world’s diversity, now embracing the unique needs of women, children, and varied lifestyles. Today it includes dietary practices specifically supportive of women’s health, integrating changing food sources that reflect what’s accessible globally, all while preserving the ancient wisdom of holistic wellbeing.
The What:
To keep your digestion steady, Ayurveda recommends warm, soothing foods that balance the digestive fire, or agni. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, and pumpkins are grounding and warming, perfect for the cooler months. Spices such as ginger, fennel, and cumin help support digestion and ease any bloating or discomfort after heavy meals. You can even try sipping on cumin-coriander-fennel tea before and after meals to support your gut health gently. Check our Jasmine Hemsley's top 3 party season lifesavers HERE as an easy way in....
If you’re feeling the effects of indulgent holiday meals, try Ayurvedic superfoods like ghee for its ability to nourish the digestive tract, or turmeric, which is both anti-inflammatory and beneficial for gut health (and are smashing in tea)!. These ancient ingredients connect us to a time-tested tradition while giving our bodies the modern support they need all while being simple and accessable at your local high street shop.
Let’s embrace the season by balancing (your chosen level of) indulgence with easy care nourishment that keeps our energy high and tummies in good spirits all season long.
